Helena Ruffin
Award-winning photographer Helena Ruffin grew up in Detroit and graduated from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, where she began taking pictures as campus photographer. Over the course of the last 30+ years, Helena has photographed people, places and things by traveling extensively throughout the world.  She has practiced her craft in many European countries including France, Spain, and Italy, as well as the United Kingdom, USSR and subsequently The Russian Federation, and then finally realizing her dream of photographing in Africa.  Ruffin's work take the mundane and force us to confront its essential strangeness. Through a change of perspective or scale, we are allowed to see something as common as flowers or twigs in a new and powerful light. Under her practiced eye, seemingly ordinary scenes (holiday shoppers, a man waiting for a train, a boat at sea) are transformed into something weightier, more complex, unsettling and poignant. She also has a profound grasp of the way surface details reveal deeper truths and her use of light and color gives her work a seductive rhythm and energy.  Above all, perhaps, Ruffin has a gift for capturing the telling detail, the fleeting moment, the humanity to be found, even in inanimate objects. In 2006 and 2007, Ruffin won entry twice in The Art of Photography Show, an international exhibition of photographic art featuring world class work from around the world.
